Every node operator who watched peers disappear this week was experiencing, at human scale, exactly the physics that our consensus algorithms are designed to abstract away.
And that abstraction is where we have grown complacent.
The Multi-Sig Is Always the Weak Point
I need to be direct about something that the industry prefers to whisper. A network that looks decentralized on a block explorer can be, underneath, a chain of dependencies resting on a few dozen stressed individuals.
The relationship runs in both directions, and this is the part most people miss. War does not merely disrupt crypto; crypto also distorts war. There is now a thriving grey economy of on-chain fundraising, some of it legitimate aid, some of it sanctions evasion, some of it outright fraud. The same rails that let a grandmother in Krakow send money to a relative in Kharkiv also let bad actors move value across borders with a speed that regulators cannot match. This is not a reason to abandon the technology. It is a reason to be honest that the technology is a tool, and tools do not have morals. People do.
I have said it before and I will say it again in this context: trust is earned in bear markets. That is true of exchanges, of protocols, and of nations. The Physical Layer Nobody Prices In

The address is a string. The transaction is a signature. Nothing is physical. But the physical layer is always there, and in a conflict it becomes the binding constraint.
Start with energy. Proof-of-work mining is famously energy-intensive, but even proof-of-stake validation, RPC serving, and exchange operations depend on reliable electricity and cooling. Odesa's grid has been under sustained attack for months as part of a broader campaign against Ukrainian energy infrastructure. When the grid falters, data centers switch to generators, generators run on fuel, fuel runs on logistics, and logistics run on roads that can be interdicted. Each layer of that stack is a potential failure point. The node does not care about the price of Ethereum. It cares about whether the diesel arrives.
Then consider connectivity. War zones see deliberate targeting of telecommunications, whether by physical strikes or cyber operations. A blockchain node without connectivity is a very expensive paperweight. This is why the concept of "decentralization" is so misleading when applied to infrastructure: a globally distributed network can still have a locally concentrated failure, and the granularity that matters to a real user is not the global node count but the connectivity between their specific city and the rest of the network.
Now the human layer, which we under-invest in most of all. The code is written by people. The keys are held by people. The grants are approved by people. The disputes are resolved by people. When those people are displaced, grieving, or simply exhausted, the system's effective decentralization collapses. I learned this during the 2022 crash, when I launched a newsletter to help developers and retail investors navigate their fear. What I found was that the technical problems were often secondary. These reserves are custodized by institutions in jurisdictions that are, for the most part, not fighting a war. The peg holds only because a small number of very conventional financial institutions agree to honor redemptions.
You can see the fragility from here. If a reserve custodian is sanctioned, if a banking partner withdraws, if a regulator decides that the compliance risk of serving a conflict-affected region is too high, the stablecoin does not break for everyone β it breaks for the people who need it most. This is a structural asymmetry. The token lives on-chain, but the value lives in a bank vault in New York or Zurich or London, and that vault can be shut without anyone touching the chain.
I watched this dynamic in 2024, when I worked with three DAOs to draft what we called an Institutional-Community Interface Protocol. The whole point of that project was to reconcile the compliance instincts of traditional finance with the autonomy instincts of decentralized communities. Worse, when the crisis hits, the crypto rails themselves degrade. Volatility spikes make stablecoins wobble. Exchanges, acting rationally, tighten compliance and slow withdrawals β exactly when users need speed. Regulation, which arrives by default in wartime, restricts the very channels that made crypto attractive. The decentralized alternative turns out to depend on the centralized world far more than the narrative admits: banks, custodians, cloud providers, internet backbone operators, and, ultimately, the physical security of a jurisdiction that is willing to let you operate.
I audited ICOs in 2017 and found governance flaws that the whitepapers papered over. The same pattern recurs at the level of the whole industry. We fundraise beautifully. We market brilliantly. We build genuinely novel technology. And then we discover, in the moment of truth, that our systems are only as robust as the unglamorous, centralized, human, physical infrastructure they actually rest on. The uncomfortable conclusion is that crypto in a war is not a substitute for the state; it is a complement to it, and a fragile one.
This is not defeatism. It is calibration. A governance architect who tells you the castle is unbreakable is selling you something. The honest architect tells you where the cracks are and hands you the mortar.
Bitcoin's Identity Crisis Arrives at the Front
I have to say something about Bitcoin here, because the timing of all this can no longer be ignored. When the spot ETFs were approved in 2024, the asset formally crossed the Rubicon. It became, in the eyes of the largest financial institutions in the world, a portfolio asset β something to be allocated, custodied, correlated, and, in moments of stress, sold alongside everything else. For two years, the industry has repeated that layer 2 rollups will bring scalability and decentralization to Ethereum, with "decentralized sequencing" as the promised end state. I have been skeptical of that promise from the beginning. The reality is that the sequencers on the major layer 2s are, in practice, single nodes operated by a small team or a foundation. A single node that orders your transactions is a single point of control, no matter how many proofs you generate. We called it decentralization because the marketing deck was beautiful.
Now put a war in the picture. A single sequencer in a single jurisdiction is precisely as resilient as that jurisdiction. A cross-border payment routed through a layer 2 with a centralized sequencer can be delayed by a geography he does not control.
We can keep writing "PowerPoint" critiques, or we can convert this into action: demand genuinely distributed sequencing, demand that sequencer operators be geographically plural, demand public contingency plans. The war has made an old critique newly urgent. The promptness with which a system degrades under stress is the truest measure of how decentralized it actually is.
AI Agents, Accountability, and the Coming Votes
Finally, I want to look slightly forward, because I wrote the "Conscious Code" manifesto in 2026 for exactly this kind of scenario, and the war is clarifying why it matters.
AI agents are already beginning to participate in governance β analyzing proposals, recommending votes, in some cases casting them. This is presented as efficiency. In a conflict zone, it becomes something else. If an AI agent is empowered to move treasury funds in response to a humanitarian emergency, who bears responsibility when it makes the wrong call? If the agent is trained on data that systematically underweights an under-represented region, it may, with perfect consistency, deny aid to the people who need it most. Accountability is not a feature you can bolt on. It is a design constraint.

There is a version of crypto that is a casino, and there is a version that is a lifeline, and the two look identical on a chart.
